Girl’s “Poofy” Holiday Dress

aaIMG_4590Oh man, sewing for little girls is a riot for many reasons, not the least of which is their extensive and specific requests.

Spinny skirts, poofy dresses, stretchy pants, sparkly shirts…my girls know what they want!  When I showed Juliet a picture of the Violette Dress pattern from Violette Field Threads, I thought she was going to have a coronary.

I’d already promised to save myself the stress of sewing all the girls’ Christmas dresses this holiday season but I just couldn’t pass up the chance to make this beauty for her.

I found this plaid Christmas-colored taffeta at Joann Fabrics, along with the sparkly red skirt fabric and tulle.  I really wanted to make the tulle-only skirt version but Juliet liked the fabric on top better.  It sure met her “poofy” specification!

I really didn’t run into any problems sewing this baby up…except maybe on the peplum.  I goofed on cutting it to match the plaid and so I had to stretch it a bit to make it work.  One side lays a bit funny due to this but it’s not too noticeable.

I’m already itching to try this pattern out on a dress for baby Marilyn.  Maybe in honor of her first birthday in April!
