Hi guys! I’ve got a pretty freaking awesome tutorial coming at you today, because it’s cut out entirely using my Cricut Maker machine!

I was present at the Cricut Mountain Makeathon event last summer when the company unveiled their latest cutting machine that is taking the craft (and sewing!) worlds by storm.

If you’ve never heard of it before then check out this Cricut Maker Review but the long and short of it is that the Cricut Maker machine cuts all the traditional materials of a typical cutting machine (paper, cardstock, vinyl, heat transfer material, etc) but it also cuts HUNDREDS of fabrics, without any stabilizer or backing. It’s so stinking amazing!

The brilliant part is that Cricut has an exclusive partnership with Simplicity Pattern Group, a pattern company known for decades as the leader in simple, stylish sewing patterns. That means that if you want to sew any number of cute projects, all you have to do is log into Cricut’s design space, choose a sewing project, slap your fabric on a special cutting mat and run it through the machine.

The Cricut Maker will cut your fabric using a teeny, tiny ROTARY blade (what?!?) and then also mark seam lines, fold lines, pattern numbers, and more on the fabric using a washable fabric marker. I mean…does it get any COOLER than that??
(Don’t make fun of my excitement. Fabric is life.)

I chose to make these super cute makeup totes to gift my mom and MIL for Mother’s Day. They were a huge hit and watching the Cricut Maker spit the pattern pieces out was nothing short of miraculous for this fabric geek.

Scroll down to watch the step-by-step video detailing the whole process and let me know what you think!

The fabric that I used was purchased from the Cricut store in prepackaged combinations. You can find the black/orange combo here and the brighter floral and polka dot combo here.

You can also purchase the washable fabric marker here and wonder clips here (these are my favorite sewing tool!).

I can’t wait for more people to figure out how easy sewing can be now that we have a machine to do the hardest parts for us. I hope that the Cricut Maker machine introduces so many more people to the wonderful world of sewing!

And check out Katie’s (from Simple Life Pattern Company) version of this tote here! She even teaches you how to add insulation to make it a lumch box!

This is great – I’ve been looking for a cute art journaling travel kit, and I think this might be perfect! Is the pattern available on Cricut Access?

That’s a great idea Tricia! I don’t think it’s included in access- I believe it’s $4.99. Let me know how it goes!

Yes, it should! As long as it’s a standard size and nothing too big.
