Sewing Spring Dresses

Whipping up a few warm weather dresses is the perfect welcome to a long overdue spring! These two dress patterns (one for girls and one for women) are surefire beginner favorites that will stand the test of time, and both are a breeze to sew. They both use woven fabrics which are easy to work with and widely available in super cute prints. Check out some inspiration below and get yourself started sewing spring dresses!

Now that warm weather is here acros North America, we can start filling our closets with adorable, spring-inspired dresses! In the interest of full disclosure, I actually sewed these dresses up last fall, but somehow these cute pictures got relegated to a forgotten hard drive and I almost missed them!

Both of my girls regularly wear these dresses to church though, so I knew I had to share this tried and true pattern and what I’d do differently for my dress. Most fabric sources are linked at the end!

Juliet and Mimi’s dresses were made using the Pixie Top and Dress from Violette Field Threads. I just love this pattern company (and have since my first purchase like 7 or 8 years ago!) and this dress is now hands down one of my favorite patterns for girls. SO simple to sew up, looks cute in a variety of fabrics and there are lots of options to up the versatility factor, like adding piping (Juliet’s striped version makes me so happy), mixing and matching bodice/skirt fabrics and I really want to try it with an added skirt ruffle or front patch pockets one of these days!

My dress is the Fringe Dress from Chalk and Notch and when I first bought the pattern I was thrilled to make a flowy, comfy, go-to dress for the warm months, and BONUS: it can be made nursing friendly! But this first version was kind of a flop due to using some crappy rayon from a bulk fabric store and choosing the wrong size. (These pictures were also taken right after my skin cancer incident so excuse the hair in my face!)

I’m always paranoid about making something too small while nursing/hanging on to extra baby weight so I made a 12 for this one and it was mistake. You can kinda see how it just hangs on me. So I gave this dress away and chalked it up to a first run muslin. I’m looking forward to trying again in a better fabric and going down a couple sizes (I’m probably about an 8 right now).

And how do pictures that are just a few months old already make me so sad? My kids grow just so DARN fast! Mimi’s hair is already so much longer and she’s losing some curls. And Juliet insists on growing hers out as well even though I adore this bob on her!
