Week 3 of the Project Run and Play challenge to sew kids clothes is here and the candy-inspired looks are live!
An influx of Halloween candy means I have Skittles on the brain…

Hey all!  I’m thrilled to be back again for the 3rd week of Project Run & Play (head over there if you haven’t voted for this week yet!); you can check out week 1 here and week 2 here.  This time we’re all about candy-inspired looks in honor of Halloween and I used Skittles as a starting point for my rainbow-themed outfits.  I actually had kind of a hard time deciding on my designs for this look even though I knew I wanted it to be colorful and sweet…until I found the multicolor fabric for Mimi’s dress.  Then I had a great time playing with fabrics as it all came together!

I also knew I wanted to make something for a boy this go-around.  My poor boys never get a chance to have things sewn for them because I usually default to dresses and girly patterns.  So, Finn got lucky this time with a brand new outfit and I got lucky that he actually liked the whole thing!  Four-year-olds can be picky, you know.

I actually began making a jumpsuit for Mimi with this fabric instead of a dress.  I used the ruffled bodice option of my Infinite A-line Dress, but extended the length on the bodice, added piping to the ruffles, piping on the contrast (yellow!) pockets and it was looking pretty  cute.  But when I tried it on her, I just didn’t love how it fit her chubby little legs and the synthetic content meant that it clung in an unflattering way as well.  So I scrapped the pants portion and went back to the drawing board.  I ended up adding a tiered ruffle skirt to it and loved the look.  BUT, once again I stepped away from my machine for FIVE minutes and this little imp cut into the darn thing!  Luckily she just cut through the bottom 4 inches or so, so I chopped those off, finished the raw edge with my serger and just left it as a tunic (because of course I didn’t have any extra fabric left).

My favorite part of the whole top, though, is the rainbow color buttons on the back!  I kinda want to eat them 🙂  I completed the look with this fun textured turquoise knit and made her some leggings.  I made a size 3 for her (even though she’s 2 1/2) again for those sturdy thighs! Hopefully she’ll get lots of wear out of them.

Finn’s outfit required some thinking outside the box because I knew he wouldn’t go for a fruity-colored crazy outfit like Mimi’s.  I started with this burgundy linen and used the Peek-a-Boo Patterns Classic Oxford pattern as a base.  Then I used some soft chambray for the pocket and yoke and went with a Mandarin collar instead of the classic dress shirt collar (I just finished the collar stand without adding the actual collar!).  And success: my little guy loves it and didn’t even think it was a dreaded “church shirt”!

For the shorts, I started with Made Everyday’s Kid Shorts pattern and made a few tweaks.  I used the flat front version and added decorative buttons on the front waistband, suspender straps with trim and cuffed the bottom hem with more of the matching trim. He loves them!  He ran & jumped all over the place when we were doing our pictures, like the new outfit gave him super powers.

Speaking of pictures, I was reminded why I don’t sew for and shoot pictures of these two very often…it’s exhausting!  Check out the pictures closely and see if you can tell which pictures were shot after Finn half fell into a fountain (one of his shoes is darker when wet – ha!).  If 4 and 2 year olds were in charge of fitness programs in gyms, we’d all be trim and svelte.  Let’s just not adopt their eating patterns (i.e. Skittles, half a banana, handful of chocolate chips, juice, yogurt, repeat).

I hope you love this week’s look! Don’t forget to go vote for your favorite over on the Project Run and Play blog.  I hope you’ll let me show you my signature look next week!

Both outfits are absolutely darling, and your kids look really happy in them! I think the buttons on the back of the tunic look like skittles, too, and those suspender shorts are so fun!
