Apparently I have a thing for reversible sewing projects. Just check out this skirt and this bag…both cute projects that can be used on both sides! I just love the idea of getting twice the amount of use out of something, especially if it’s handmade.

This dress was made using See Kate Sew’s new line of quilting cottons called “Kiss Me Kate” and it’s all ADORABLE. In fact I think I need a quilt out of this stuff for Mimi and Alice’s room. There are lipsticks and bows and stripes and polka dots and lips; all the girliest prints and cutest colors. Check out the whole line here (on Amazon!)  Kate is yet another amazingly talented blogger that I’ve been lucky enough to meet and get to know in recent years. She’s just as sweet in real life as she seems online!

This little reversible toddler dress for Mimi came from the desire to use both of these gorgeous fabrics on one project but not being able to decide which one I wanted to see more of! (I used Polka Dot Bow in purple and Nail Polish Stripe Black)

I used my Infinite A-line Dress pattern for this one but any basic toddler dress pattern would work. You’ll want to keep the silhouette super simple though, without embellishments that could irritate your little girl when flipped inside out (that bow on Mimi’s dress is pinned on!). Also be sure to stick with sleeveless or cap sleeve so that you can do the burrito roll technique and hide all your raw edges. I explain how to do this in Infinite A-line pattern instructions!

Ready to do it??

  1. If you’re going with a cap sleeve dress like I did here, you’ll need to cut out 4 cap sleeve pieces (2 of each fabric) instead of 2 on the fold. You’ll also need to add a seam allowance to the straight edge (the one that says fold). See below for an example of my size 4 sleeve.

2. Then we need to cut out a few additional pattern pieces. I started with a button placket (which I later turned into a bow…read on!), front and back bodice pieces, cap sleeves, front and back skirt pieces and front and back skirt ruffles for EACH FABRIC. (Later on I ditched the skirt ruffle pieces in favor of a shorter babydoll dress look but it’d be adorable with them too!)

3. Sew one sleeve piece of each fabric together along that straight edge, right sides together.

4. Pull sleeve pieces apart, open seam allowances and press flat. Then fold back together, this time right sides OUT and press again!

5. Sew sleeves to the dress and continue with instructions all the way through adding the skirt. Then add ANOTHER skirt front and back to the inside lining so that you have a full dress on the inside and outside! (at this point, your side seams will still be UNSEWN). Open up the dress and lay flat as seen below.

6. Now we’re going to grab the top layer dress (the purple dress, in my case) and hold it in one hand while flipping the other dress out of the way. Lay flat again so that you’re dress looks like the following:

7. And it’s time to sew the side seams! Begin in the middle of each side seam so that you can match up your underarm and bodice seams and then sew all along one side of the dress and then along the other. No need to finish these side seams but be sure to press well.

8. For the hem, I didn’t want the wrong side of either fabric poking out while being worn so I decided to sew the raw edges together! Just press each bottom edge under an equal amount (I used about 1/2″) and then topstitch the two layers together all the way around. If your skirt pieces don’t match up exactly (mine didn’t) then you can adjust a side seam a bit until they do.

As you can see, I ended up going with a keyhole opening in the back instead of a placket and just used a flatter button so that it wouldn’t bother Mimi while wearing. I only used one button and  then simply button it on the inside when she’s wearing the striped side out but you can certainly add a button on both sides if you desire.

I used the discarded placket pieces to make cute fabric bows which are SO easy and really complete the look, I think. Tutorial for those coming soon!

Really cute. As an alternative hem, you could make both a few inches longer at the bottom when cutting out, turn up 2 inches to the inside, and sew each hem separately. Then you get a glimpse of the inside dress when wearing.
    Thank you, Margaret
