Are you a homeschooler or know someone who is? Or do you think it’s just a strange and bizarre fad? We always get lots of questions about this aspect of our lives and how we make it happen, so today I want to tell you what the best part of homeschooling is…

TIME! And no, I don’t mean that we’re always short on it, but rather just the opposite. Homeschooling my kids means that we have MORE time: time to spend together, time at home, time for play and time for learning.

I know this seems kind of impossible; after all, how can a frazzled mom of 8 kids find MORE time by keeping all her children at home and being solely responsible for their entire education?? There are actually several reasons this is the case…

It seems like there are lots of home school pros and cons, but we definitely think the good stuff outweighs the negative! We love the freedom and independence homeschooling offers, but our favorite benefit might surprise you...

1. Home school is flexible

When I had the twins, we just paused home schooling for a while and instead of learning reading and writing, we learned about babies! More time for learning life skills equals a win in my book. This is also the reason that I’ve found time for my own pursuits. My big kids are in charge during quiet time when I escape to my office to blog, sew or put my feet up with some chocolate.

2. No wasted time on transportation or logistics

We avoid the dreaded carpool line &/or bus stop wait because my kids aren’t going somewhere else for school. This also means that our lunch and “recess” breaks are shorter because the kids don’t have other students to wait for. Bonus: we don’t spend any time packing lunches! I’m pretty sure I’d be terrible at those.

Lastly, I love that my kids can sleep in when needed and we also have no homework to deal with! Or maybe EVERYTHING we do is considered homework??

3. More face to face time with family

This is probably my favorite benefit of homeschooling (although probably my teen’s least favorite right now- ha!). I’m constantly aware of my children’s moods and can often spot a problem very quickly.

That’s not to say that being in the same house together all day is easy. We have to schedule time away from each other so that this pro doesn’t turn into a con 🙂 But overall I love how much time we have with each other.

4. Kids learn at their own pace

Sometimes letting my children learn a little slower than their peers seems like it will take all the time in the world! But in reality, I think we spend less time fighting when kids are allowed to progress at their own comfort level.

I still remember battling Liam when he was learning to read, and then when I finally learned to let go, he did it with no trouble at all and is a passionate reader to this day.

5. I’m more productive when life is busy

My older kids used to go to a public school program once a week last year and I have to say, I got NOTHING done when they were gone! I find that I’m way more productive when my kids are all home, partly because the older kids can entertain the little ones and also because I know that every spare minute needs to be accounted for.

Admittedly, this can take a toll when I don’t get the rest I need, but I enjoy staying productive and really love teaching my kids to work alongside me.

I know that homeschooling is not for everyone, but our learning process as we figure out our own educational path has been pretty awesome.

If you’re considering homeschooling yourself, I hope these home school pros and cons help you make your decision!

I homeschooled my son for many years and loved it for all of the reasons you mentioned. He loved the flex-scheduling and the idea that if he just wasn’t feeling a topic, we could skip it for the day and move on and then revisit the subject later in the week. He joined a homeschool YMCA program and was able to get his Phys Ed requirements with a group of kids who were studying at home, like him. That was great because I am the worst at organizing kickball games and races. 🙁 The hardest part of this homeschooling is not being able to come and go during the day. Like a job, you have to commit to a given schedule.

Yes! So many wonderful things about it but it’s not always easy.
