aaIMG_4590Oh man, sewing for little girls is a riot for many reasons, not the least of which is their extensive and specific requests.

Spinny skirts, poofy dresses, stretchy pants, sparkly shirts…my girls know what they want!  When I showed Juliet a picture of the Violette Dress pattern from Violette Field Threads, I thought she was going to have a coronary.

VFT is one of the masters of fun, flirty girls’ dresses and I love their whole collection.  I also own a couple other dresses and some of their skirts as well.  So much eye candy when it comes to girly patterns!

I’d already promised to save myself the stress of sewing all the girls’ Christmas dresses this holiday season but I just couldn’t pass up the chance to make this beauty for her.

I found this plaid Christmas-colored taffeta at Joann Fabrics, along with the sparkly red skirt fabric and tulle.  Even though I try to branch out from always using traditional Christmas colors, I tend to go back to the basics at this time of year.  It just looks so festive!

I really wanted to make the tulle-only skirt version but Juliet liked the fabric on top better.  It sure met her “poofy” specification! Tulle can be tricky to sew with, but this pattern simplifies it quite well.  I also really like how the skirt lays on the tulle, without being too gigantic or bunching around the waist.  The lower back neckline is so pretty too, and perfect for our mild Phoenix winters but laying on a fur coat, cute cardigan or other dressy outwerwear would totally work too.

I really didn’t run into any problems sewing this baby up…except maybe on the peplum.  I goofed on cutting it to match the plaid and so I had to stretch it a bit to make it work.  One side lays a bit funny due to this but it’s not too noticeable.

I’m already itching to try this pattern out on a dress for baby Marilyn.  Maybe in honor of her first birthday in April!
