There’s something SO satisfying about sewing for an ever changing body; especially after trying on a hundred million ill-fitting options and seriously contemplating setting fire to your closet.

The Agnes dress I made here has been a home run and I’ve worn it a ton during the last few months, but I also wanted to try my hand at a top that wasn’t strictly maternity, and would transition well to those awkward postpartum days.

I settled on the Phoenix blouse from Hey June Handmade because it’s simple, flowy and loose fitting but also had enough stylistic elements to keep it from being just a big box. You can’t see all the great details very well on my black fabric, but trust me…it’s cute!

Fit and construction

I went with a size 14 (about 2 sizes bigger than my pre-pregnancy measurements) in order to accommodate a third trimester belly. But I find that I have to wear a tank top under this one because I made the shoulders/neckline too large and because the front slit is too low for my liking.

I probably should’ve gone with a 12 in retrospect (maybe with the length of a 14?) and I’ll definitely make it again in a 10 for when I’m not so pregnant. I’ll also raise that front slit by about an 1-2 inches so I’m not always worried about flashing people.

I also chose not to add tassels to that front opening (mainly because I didn’t have anything suitable to use for them and was too lazy to go to the store #storyofmylife). While I like the look fine, the corners of that front opening fold in sometimes because there’s nothing there to weigh this light rayon down. I’ll definitely add them next time or use a slightly stiffer fabric like linen.

Other that those goofs on my part, it’s a fantastic top and one of the comfiest things I own! It will be perfect for all spring and summer, especially when I’m trying to find tops to skim over that new-mom belly.

So what do you think of the Phoenix Blouse??
