Help your family show their gratitude to each other with this cute DIY Thanksgiving banner!
The Cricut Maker machine makes this fun project quick and easy.

The holiday season is almost upon us and I’m so happy!  There’s just nothing as fun and heartwarming as getting the family together for Thanksgiving or Christmas.  It’s obvious why it’s so many people’s favorite season! But as much as I love the holidays, I realize how easy it is for us to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of sales, shopping and materialism that has begun to accompany this time of year.

I’m constantly looking for ways to teach my children to be grateful for their own blessings and to find opporunities to serve those in need.  Kira has also been nagging me to make more Fall decor (after Halloween is packed away, we don’t really have much cute stuff left out!) so this banner is two solutions in one.

I used my Cricut Maker machine to cut out some cute Thanksgiving/Autumn images out of felt, made a little pocket on the back of each and strung them on some twine.  This week, as we’re preparing for Thanksgiving festivities, we’ll be thinking of reasons we’re grateful for each other and then writing them on little slips of paper and sticking them in each person’s little felt pocket!  (Yes, I have more children than this, I just decided to stick with the kids that can write and understand what’s going on this year).  Watch the how-to video below and read on for the full tutorial!

Materials Needed:

Felt in various colors: Black, Brown (2+ shades), red, orange (2 shades), yellow, green, off-white (I used pre-cut squares like these)
Fabric Glue (I used Liquid Stitch)
Coordinating thread

Begin by choosing the images you’d like to use for your banner.  I used the following from Cricut Design Space (these are all free with a Cricut Access Subscription): Acorn, Pilgrim Hat, Cornucopia, Pumpkin, Turkey.  Resize your images so that they’re all roughly the same size.  I made each of mine no more than 6″ wide or high since I was using precut 6″ square pieces of felt.

You can print the page of gratitude prompts HERE!

A few notes about cutting felt: I used my Cricut Maker for this project and I’m really glad I did!  When I chose “felt” for my material (you choose your material after clicking “make it” once your design is ready to cut), it prompted me to use a deep point blade.  But when I installed it and did a test cut (Cricut cutting rule #1: always test a new material!) it dragged through my very thick felt.

So instead, I clicked “choose a different blade” when it asked what blade I was using and I chose the rotary blade.  I love this little baby!  It glided through that thick stubborn felt with easy and didn’t drag it around my mat and destroy it.  The only other thing I had to do was use scissors to clip a few stubborn strands of felt that didn’t get cut by the machine.  The rotay blade did amazing even with the teeny tiny cuts on that turkey face!  I was super impressed.

Now on to the tutorial!

`1. While cutting your felt pieces, be sure to cut one additional main silhouette of each design out of a neutral piece of felt for the back pocket.   You can also just hand cut a square or circle piece of felt for this since no one will really see it!  Then sew this little pocket to the back of your main piece along the 2 sides and the bottom.  This creates the pocket!

2. Once the rest of your felt pieces are cut out, glue each image together as shown in Design Space.  I originally tried Elmer’s glue, which I heard often works on felt, but my pieces were too thick and stiff and they all kept coming apart.  So then I grabbed a bottle of Liquid Stitch and it worked great!  Let dry completely.

3.  Cut out the initial of each child or person who will use the banner and glue one to the front of each felt image.  My letters were about 2″ tall.  Now when Kira writes a gratitude note for Toby, she knows which felt pocket to put it in!

4.  String the felt pieces on a length of twine and hang it up in your house; be sure to hang it low enough for little participants to reach!  Give the kids slips of gratitude prompts (print out HERE) and let them go to town.  Enjoy an added sense of peace in your household during the holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
