Wrap tops, skirts and dresses are having a moment right now and I’m loving them all! They’re cute, flattering, easy to wear and easy to sew.
This peplum wrap top pattern has stolen my heart and I just love it in a red gingham. Read on for all the details!

I’m having a little obsession with the wrap trend lately, as evidenced here, here, here and here! As long as there’s no risk of flashing undergarments, I love everything about these pieces: the flattering waist-whittling, the ruffles on most of them and the coverage!

This top is no exception. The wrap top pattern that I used here is McCall’s 7627 and it was a breeze to sew! As is my tendency, I found myself squeezing the thing out of only 3 yards of fabric (my size called for 3 3/8) but I managed it and am totally in love! I used Riley Blake’s red gingham cotton from my friend Deanna’s shop but she’s sold out of the red. I did find lots of other gorgeous colors here! (Similar jeans found here)

I ended up skimping a bit on both the width and length of the ties, which still ended up just perfect despite my being stingy on fabric. I also pieced together the facing from scraps which never matters since it’s hidden anyway. Gotta love when it all works out!

I love that this top is girly, flouncy, flirty and cute. And I’ve found its oversized silhouette looks best with skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. I can’t decide whether I love the sleeve ruffles or the peplum flounce best!

The fit of this pattern is a little unique though and I wanted to mention it. I made a size 16 (according to my measurements) although in retrospect I probably should’ve at least sized down to a 14 (I am forever forgetting that commercial patterns include like 8 billion inches of ease). But if you look closely at the front bodice, you’ll notice that there isn’t any darting, just a couple pleats at the shoulders and side seams. Because of this, that extra fabric around the bust is there hanging out instead of being taken in by darts. The sleeves are also not fitted at all and the shoulders are dropped. I’m pretty sure this is intentional and not a poor fit issue with my sizing because the pattern envelope pictures look the same.

This different sort of fit was a little strange to me at first and I’m still not entirely sure if I love that excess fabric. But I’m also not sure it’s worth it to deconstruct the whole thing and take it in! So for now I’m sporting it as is and enjoying all the compliments coming my way…it seems everyone loves the red gingham and girly silhouette as much as I do!
